When it comes to Michael Jackson art, Monica Lynn Manoski thinks big. The mixed-media artist from Munster has fashioned a 6-foot-high and 8-foot-wide depiction of the late, great Gary native. "It's essentially almost a wall mural," said Manoski, who graduated summa cum laude this spring from Arizona State University in Tempe.
The 6-foot-tall image of the pop legend will accompany Manoski when she joins David Nordahl -- Jackson's personal artist -- at an "Intimate Portrait" event on Sunday, Aug. 29, at the MJFanvention in Merrillville's Radisson Hotel.
Manoski, the holder of a bachelor's degree in fine arts, broke new ground for herself while creating the giant interpretation of the electric entertainer. "I actually first started working with glitter on this portrait," Manoski, 22, said. "I just really wanted the painting to have something extra, and so that's when I thought of incorporating the glitter."
Spray paint and metallic acrylic paint were used for the mammoth work.
But it isn't the only Manoski portrait that captures the aura of MJ.
She also has done an imposing painting of him that stretches 6 feet high and 4 feet wide. Manoski doesn't exactly take an objective view of her subject. "I'm a huge fan," assured the artist who has a dream of having her own art gallery.
But in the immediate future, Manoski will participate in a question-and-answer session -- and display her Jackson art -- at the fan convention in Merrillville that salutes him.
The event will be highlighted by the input of Nordahl, an American painter who created some of the most notable portraits of the "King of Pop."
The artist is especially known for pieces that show Jackson in a mythical light.
During his appearance at MJFanvention, Nordahl will relay conversations he had with Jackson. Nordahl's artwork also will be displayed.
